Regional Housing Remains Strong

A number of recent real estate articles are confirming the strength of our regional real estate market.  Lower inventory, especially in new home construction, coupled with low interest rates continues to have a positive effect on appreciation as well as the stability of the real estate market overall.  The following is from a report looking at the overall strength of the national housing market.

The nation’s growth “is finally being driven by housing again,” proclaimed David Crowe, NAHB’s chief economist, during the association’s Construction Forecast Webinar on Wednesday. Home prices have been rising, partly the result of tightening inventory of completed new homes, which in turn is stimulating demand. Employment—a major factor in home-buying decisions—continues to strengthen, albeit incrementally. And housing’s recovery is now national in scope….Read the entire article here.

Celebrate Davis! is an annual free community-wide festival organized by the Davis Chamber of Commerce. It is part picnic, part music festival, part business expo. Visit community businesses and organizations at their booths, buy dinner, enjoy live music, and watch fireworks at 9PM. Parking near Celebrate Davis! is very hard to find. It is definitely an event to bike to (free valet bike parking is available), walk to or take the public transportation.

Located in Community Park between the Art Center and the high school practice fields, the fun starts at 4:30, and the fireworks start at 9:00 pm.

UC Davis Museum of Art – One Step Closer To Reality

The University of California at Davis is getting a new art museum and it is going to be quite the complex.  Boasting a spacious 25,000 square feet, the new facility will be known as the Jan Shrem and Maria Manetti Shrem Museum of Art, in honor of the couples generously donation of $10 million toward the enterprise.  The mission of the ambitious project is a perfect fit for Davis.  From the museum’s Facebook page:

Dedicated to the belief that education and the arts should be accessible to all people, and building upon the celebrated history of irreverence and iconoclasm in the visual arts by the distinguished faculty and alumni at UC Davis, the new museum is to be a welcoming and open forum for experimentation and the exploration of new ideas by artists and the broad range of diverse cultures that make up the campus and region.

A description of museum design concept was summed up nicely in a recent sfgate.com article:

The team’s Grand Canopy concept enclosed its full-block site in an acre-plus sloping roof draped over galleries, art studios and landscaped outdoor spaces.

The open-air portion of the complex would face north toward the center of the UC Davis campus, sharing a corner across from a quad with the Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts.

The patterned roof, and the variety of indoor and open-air “rooms” underneath, “refers to the agricultural landscape and the vast horizon you have here,” architect Florian Idenburg said recently. Beyond the look, Idenburg said SO – IL’s goal is to create a “new model for a museum on campus, a museum for a group of people still in the phase of becoming.”

Embracing Sustainability – Whole Earth Festival

For a long time, Davis has understood the need to educate and embrace the environment resulting in the origins of one local festival that is celebrating its 44th year, Whole Earth Festival. If the environment and sustainability are important to you as well,  mark your calendars for May 10th – 12th and make plans to attend Whole Earth Festival.

Whole Earth Festival is a free event that takes place on the UC Davis Campus every year. Whole Earth Festival aims to create an educational and sustainable community. Art is used to involve visitors in the ultimate goal of learning about activism, wellness, and the environment.  The festival is self-sustaining and prides itself on always diverting at least 95% of waste into compost and recycling.

History of Whole Earth Festival . The origins of the festival date back to UC Davis in the late 1960′s.  From their website:

Whole Earth Festival was born when an art class taught by Jose Arguelles had an “Art Happening” on the University of California, Davis campus in 1969. The students used art to involve visitors in the ultimate goal of learning about activism, wellness, and the environment. Whole Earth Festival aims to ignite passion, propel creativity, and leave visitors with inspiration.

Following the United Nations declaration of “Earth Day” in 1970, the third “Art Happening” in 1971 was renamed “Whole Earth.” Later, Whole Earth Festival was sponsored by the Associated Student’s Experimental College, and has since become a self-sustaining unit. The Whole Earth Festival has evolved over four decades into what can be seen every Mother’s Day weekend on the U.C. Davis campus.

What’s Dishcrawl? Glad you asked.  Dishcrawl is a progressive food crawl where attendees get a nice sampling of local cuisine as well as insight by chefs and restauranteurs.  Each restaurant will offer samples of three house-specialty dishes, from bites to small plates. Adult beverages are not included, but can be purchased separately.

Which restaurants will be visited? That’s a secret until just before the tour launches. After you sign up via the Dishcrawl site, you’ll be emailed the name and address of the first restaurant on the tour (the tour meet-up spot) – 48 hours in advance.
